Arriving in Vienna

By Plane 

  • Vienna International Airport (VIE, Schwechat) is the city’s airport and the country’s largest, located southeast outside of the city. viennaairport.com
  • An alternative is Bratislava Airport in Slovakia (BTS), approximately one hour from Vienna with direct buses to the Vienna International Bus Terminal (VIB).

Public Transport in Vienna (Wiener Linien)

Vienna’s public transport operator, Wiener Linien, runs an extensive network of underground (U-Bahn), tram (Straßenbahn) and bus (Autobus) services. Regular services operate daily from approximately 5.00 am until 12.30 am, with departures every few minutes. NightLine bus services run every 30 minutes. On Fridays, Saturdays and the nights before public holidays, all underground lines operate 24 hours a day at 15-minute intervals.

Tickets and Zones

Tickets are valid on all Wiener Linien services within the city limits (Zone 100 / Kernzone). An additional fare is required for areas outside the city limits (e.g. to the airport). Buy tickets at machines in stations, at Wiener Linien Vorverkaufsstellen (sales offices), at tobacconists (Trafik), via the WienMobil app, or online and validate your ticket before travelling.

Vienna has an extensive and growing cycling network, with over 1,600 km of cycle lanes and paths. Cycling is practical for commuting, especially in the inner districts.

If you plan to drive in Austria, familiarise yourself with local traffic rules and parking regulations before you get behind the wheel. Key points differ from many other countries, including mandatory rescue lane formation on motorways, strict equipment requirements, and zone-based parking in Vienna.
