Learning German is an important step towards settling successfully in Austria. While not all positions at the university require German proficiency, a good command of the language makes everyday life much easier.

German skills are also required for certain residence permits and long-term stay options. The university provides financial support for German language courses to help you get started.

German For Residence Permits

German proficiency is required for certain residence permits in Austria. This requirement does not apply to the Settlement Permit Researcher or accompanying family members. However, for a Red-White-Red Card Plus (Rot-Weiß-Rot-Karte Plus), basic German skills may be required. Consult the official government websites for guidance.

Learning German at the University of Vienna

The University of Vienna provides financial support for German language courses at the Sprachenzentrum (Language Center of the University of Vienna) for all new international employees, both academic and general staff, to facilitate your start at work.

The Sprachenzentrum offers general and scientific language courses at various levels in over 30 languages. Additionally employees of the University of Vienna receive a 25% discount on regular German and foreign language courses.
