Arrival for EU, EEA and Swiss Nationals

At a Glance

To enter Austria, you will need a valid national identity card or passport. As an EU, EEA or Swiss national, you do not require a visa and have unrestricted access to the Austrian labour market from day one.

Two mandatory administrative steps after you arrive:

1. Always required: Mandatory Residence Registration (Meldezettel) 

Register your place of residence at a municipal registration office (Meldeservicestelle) within three working days of your arrival for yourself and all accompanying family members. You will receive a registration confirmation called the Meldezettel. You need this document for many subsequent steps, such as opening a bank account.

2. For Stays Longer Than Three Months: Registration Certificate (Anmeldebescheinigung)

If you plan to stay in Austria for more than three months, apply for a registration certificate (Anmeldebescheinigung) for yourself and all accompanying family members within four months of your arrival at MA 35 (Municipal Department 35 - Immigration and Citizenship) in Vienna.

Non-compliance may result in a fine

Failure to register or to apply for the registration certificate within the legal deadlines is an administrative offence and can lead to a financial penalty.

Checklist: EU/EEA and Swiss Nationals

  1. Valid identity card or passport available before travel

  3. Address registered at municipal registration office (Meldeservicestelle) within three working days – Meldezettel received
  4. If staying longer than three months: Registration Certificate (Anmeldebescheinigung) applied for within four months at MA 35 in Vienna.
